Quick, to the Pigeon Cave!

There’s a roost of Rock pigeons at the old school, they nest in one of the side buildings. When they hear anyone approach, they come flying out of this tiny opening, and head for the roof. (The opening is underneath the overhang they are on.) When you approach again, from the other direction, they all head back into their roost. Naturally, I had the wrong lens on my camera, but it’s great fun watching them. Click images for larger size.

  1. Are they a family grouping? Or do they communally nest? They all appear to be adults of the same relative size. I know very little about pigeons.

  2. I have no idea if they are family. They definitely communally nest. There’s a large roost of them at the old school, and they are predated on fairly often (the birds of prey know where they are), but the roost never seems to diminish much.
