Click for full size. This was my first ever spotting the orange variant of House Finch. Exciting!

  1. Thank you! I was so excited to see that orange finch! I had no idea of what I was looking at, I didn’t have my bird book at hand. According to my Peterson’s guide, this is a normal variant of House Finch, but I had no idea.

  2. Yes, like sparrows, finches are prone to the dinosaur poses and attitude. They might not roar, but there’s a roar inside. Snag! I’m surrounded by it, and defend it ferociously, too. If my application to FTB is accepted, I won’t have any more convenient excuses to put off my dead tree project. I want to do a series of photos, in which dead trees are seen as sculpture, not some ugly eyesore that just has to be pulled down. Snag is absolutely vital to wildlife here (and everywhere, I’m sure), birds in particular. Pileated woodpeckers are disappearing from ND because people have this fucking mania to clear out dead wood. One of those things that makes me want to slap people about.
