Downy Woodpecker

Picoides pubescens – This is the female. They lack the red flash of the male. We have several nesting pairs on our property, and I love watching them, and listening to them. Click images for larger size.

  1. Thank you! I think they are, too. The bluejays didn’t cooperate with me today, they just hid in the pines and screamed. I haven’t heard geese yet, looking forward to the honking.

  2. At my house, I listen for the mourning doves and was very pleased to hear and see them earlier this month while shoveling snow. Normally, I only hear them.

  3. Awww, they are so lovely. One of my most favourite sounds is that of mourning doves.
